Solomon Islands domesticate Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's)
Prime Minister Sogavare reported that Solomon Islands had already begun work on domesticating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's). This is done by integrating these goals into the 2016 to 2035 National Development Strategy (NDS). Prime Minister Sogavare says the NDS provides a clear, coherence and harmonized approach of his government's way in delivering the country's national policies and programs to the people.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Sogavare highlighted the urgent need of action to combat climate change. He says, last year was a year of agreement and adoption of frameworks. This year he says, must be to implement the frameworks and agreements to make them operational.
Prime Minister Sogavare says Solomon Islands welcome the Paris Agreement and in doing so had already ratified the Paris Agreement. It's instrument of ratification has just been submitted recently and he highlighted the urgent need of action to combat climate change. He says Solomon Islands is concerned that the ambition under the Paris Agreement is very low. Mr. Sogavare says the ambition to limit warming to well below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre industrial level is alarmingly low. In particular Prime Minister Sogavare appeals to "big emitters and industrial countries" to scale up the ambition of their respected intended nationally determined contribution, in-order to protect the integrity of the Paris Agreement. He then urges countries that have not ratified the Paris Agreement to do so as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Sogavare says every country is duty bound to strengthen the Paris Agreement.
In conclusion, Prime Minister Sogavare says the journey to implement the Sustainable Development Goals have begun. He says the success of the Assembly will be measured on how much they have achieved in transforming people's lives to guarantee them a sustainable future. This he stressed must not be failed by the Assembly.
