BY GEORGINA KEKEA SEXUAL jealousy, disagreement over disciplining of children, disagreement over spending priorities, men’s alcohol consumption, men’s failure to work, men coercing women to work harder and failure of wives to fulfill husbands’ expectations are some of the reasons of marital conflict and violence in the home. Australia’s Department of Pacific Affairs study titled ‘Do no Harm’, reported that the most violence reported during the research was connected to men’s alcohol consumption, which drains resources from households. When women questioned their men in how they spend their money, this in turn can cause conflict in the home. CLAIMS OF PROSTITUTION POINTS TO TRAFFICKING WHILE POLICE REMAIN ALOOF

BY GEORGINA KEKEA SOLOMON Islands Government does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so. A report from the Department of State, on trafficking, said Solomon Islands government has proved its efforts by initiating its first two prosecutions of suspected traffickers and investigating the parents of two child victims. This investigation allegedly took place in Temotu province. Despite its effort and initiative to amend a legal agenda to provide additional protections for children against all forms of trafficking, the Solomon Islands government still does not meet the minimum standards in several key areas. SOLOMON ISLANDS IN EVEREST

BY GEORGINA KEKEA TWENTY-TWO year-old Talita Mazini Henderson is said to be the first Solomon Islander to fly the country’s flag high at the Mount Everest Base Camp.       A British citizen, and a Solomon Islander by blood, Talita’s mother comes from Nusa Simbo in the Western Province. All her life Talita had been living abroad, but comes home occasionally to connect with her mother’s side of the family. It was only recently, Talita made the trek to Mount Everest Base Camp as part of a group from the University that she went to in the United Kingdom. This was for a charity fundraising project. While the focus of her expedition was for the fundraising project, the pride in carrying the flag that bore her roots also made a significant impact in the hearts of many that saw her picture via social media at the Everest Base Camp.
