Solomon Islands Government strengthens project management capacity to implement National Development Strategy (NDS)
The
Ministry of Development Planning and Aid Co-ordination (MDPAC) has taken
another step towards the successful implementation of the National Development
Strategy (NDS) 2017-2035 with the signing of a contract between Mr Hasmukh Lal,
Director of USP (Pacific TAFE) and Mr Shadrach Fanega, Permanent Secretary of
MDPAC on Friday 23rd of September 2016.
Pacific
TAFE, an arm of the University of South Pacific in Fiji that specializes in
skills based education and training in Pacific countries, will train 50 officers
from a range of national government ministries to Certificate IV level in
Project Management Practice in Honiara from October to December this year.
Mr
Fanega said “Providing this accredited training to targeted officers
responsible for implementing development budget projects identified in the
Medium Term Development Plan 2017-2021 and the National Development Strategy
2017 -2035 shows the Government’s strong commitment to improve implementation
of projects that will grow our economy”.
“It
will provide the necessary skills development to ensure responsible officers
understand all aspects of managing development projects, from determining
scope, scheduling, procurement planning, budget, stakeholder and risk
management, project monitoring, reporting and evaluation. As a result officers will be better equipped
project and programme managers in their respective ministries” Mr Fanega added.
The
Director of Pacific TAFE, Mr Hasmukh Lal said that Pacific TAFE was very
pleased to be able to offer this important skills based education and training
face to face in Honiara for the first time and contribute to the capacity
development of Solomon Islanders public sector officers.
“Formal skills in Project Management are very
sought after in the region and participants who successfully complete the
Certificate IV course will have a pathway to pursue higher qualifications at
USP and other institutions, including Diploma level study in Project Management
should they wish to pursue this” he said.
The
course would be evaluated on completion and if successful, it would be
considered again for delivery in 2017.
