UNPS in country consultations meets rural Solomon Islanders

As part of its United Nations Pacific Strategy (UNPS) in country consultations, heads of various UN Agencies in the Pacific have recently held fruitful consultations with people from the communities of Auki and surrounding areas in Malaita Province.

The team is being Led by the UN Resident Coordinator, Ms. Osnat Lubrani.

The team also visited the Malaita Provincial Government where they were met by the Deputy Premier of Malaita Provincial Government (MPG), Mr. Alick Maeaba and the Deputy Provincial Secretary, Mr. Robert Wales Feratelia. During the consultation, the MPG highlighted key areas of priority which their government is working on. Good governance, land reform, economic development and education. Other areas of community concern which the MPG highlighted were acute water shortages and sanitation. The DPS said donors need to listen to the people in order to address their needs.

Another part of the field trip by the UNPS is to Gwounoa School just on the outskirts of Auki town. There the delegation was treated to traditional welcome by the people of the community as well as a welcome song by the students who were pleased to grace the visit of such a delegation.

Gwounoa School was a beneficiary of the UN WASH project in which an ablution block was built as well as having water supply installed in the school.
Sanitation is also essential for children's quality education.

At Kilufi’I hospital, a presentation report was made by staff of the hospital on work done in providing health assistance to communities and regions in the Malaita province.

Sister Marilyn Iro, the Reproductive Health Coordinator in Malaita said, more women had now come forward to receive family planning methods, citing the use of jadelle, a contraceptive implant used to prevent pregnancy being high on the agenda.

Ms Iro said there had been slight decrease in the number of women attending antenatal clinic where in some clinics or health centres, some had reported no cases of antenatal patients for 2 months at the most.

Another presentation was made on immunization programs carried out by the Malaita Provincial Health Division as well.  With the increase of awareness on reproductive health issues, women are becoming more empowered thus making choices which are deemed fit to help the country in its progress to achieve the sustainable development goals SDG's.

At Radeaekoa village in the Langalanga lagoon, the UN delegates also met with women and men of the communities.

Evidence of the skills and knowledge which the community had benefitted from by the UN SWoCK project are still visible. However the community there cited land as a major challenge which they are faced with amidst the climate change issues. The field trip to Auki is an important component of the consultation process being carried out in the UNPS. This will also ensure that the UNPS 2018 – 2022 is aligned with key regional and national development priorities to be addressed in partnerships with government, civil society and other partners.

The delegation to Auki includes, Ms. Osnat Lubrani - UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Sheldon Yett - UNICEF Representative in the Pacific, Mr. Bruce Campbell, UNFPA Representative and Pacific Sub-Office Director, Ms. Aleta Miller, UN Women Representative in the Pacific, Mr. Bahkhodir Bukhanov, UNDP Pacific Country Director, Dr. Ridha Jebeniani - WHO, Ms. Azusa Kubota, UNDP Country Manager and UN Joint Presence Manager, Solomon Islands and Ms. Salma Eihagyousif, Regional Program and SIDS Engagement Coordinator, Mr. Roy Mae - Under Secretary Technical, MDPAC SIG.
