CAREERS MARKET A SUCCESS

Over five hundred students took part in a career education program that involved an exhibition of businesses and organisations that aim to help students develop their career goals.

Careers market attracts 500 students from different schools
The event “Careers Market” is jointly hosted by Woodford International School and the Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SICCI).
The program was successfully launched on Wednesday at the Woodford school ground with the attendance of students from 10 different schools and a trade-show of businesses, SOEs (state-owned enterprises) and government ministries.

Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development, Dr. Franco Rodie officially delivered the keynote address with remarks from the SICCI CEO Dennis Meone and Woodford Acting Head of School Rachel MacKinnon.

Mr. Meone said the Chamber is pleased to have taken part in organising the Careers Market emphasising that this was driven by the positive response from businesses members who were very keen to support the initiative.

“As the peak body representing the private sector we are focused on supporting businesses to thrive and create jobs, but at the same time we need to inspire our students, our young generation, to reach their full potential as they are our future workforce and entrepreneurs,” said the CEO.

“Businesses will need engineers, mechanics, plumbers, accountants, lawyers, builders and the list goes on.

“I hope by the end of [Careers Market], all students are better informed about the career opportunities that are out there, understand the challenges and realities of the labour market and have more information to guide their own career paths.”


The Chamber would like to thank Woodford for the successful collaboration in establishing the Careers Market and SICCI members who came out as sponsors of the event; South Pacific Oil, Solomon Islands Ports Authority, Pan Oceanic Bank, Adkonect, Coral Sea Resort and GTL Holdings.

VANUATU BIGGEST IMPORTER OF CANNED TUNA FROM SOLOMON ISLANDS

BY GEORGINA KEKEA VANUATU is the biggest importer of canned tuna from Solomon Islands. National Fisheries Development (NFD) Limited Managing Director, Frank Wickham shared this information in a recent radio talkback show to mark World Tuna Day. Wickham says the biggest export destination for SolTuna’s canned tuna is Vanuatu. “Followed by Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the market is now open in New Zealand. There is a big move now to promote and market in New Zealand and Australia. We have containers going to Kiribati, Tuvalu with a few to Tonga and Marshall Islands. The biggest of them all is Vanuatu”, Wickham said. HOW A TINY PROVINCE IN SOLOMON ISLANDS REACHES OUT TO AUSTRALIA

THE small island province of Temotu in the far eastern part of Solomon Islands is one of the nation’s most prone natural hazard areas. The tsunami in 2013 swamped through 20 villages With an estimated population of less than 25,000, Temotu often has its bouts of natural disasters. In 2015, tropical cyclone Pam left devastating effects on the tiny province where people were affected from damages to their fruit trees, food gardens and agricultural crops. People near the coast were evacuated. Then again in 2017, TC Donna in its wake and formation also impacted badly on the people of Temotu.
