The three staff are from the Social Demographic Section within the National Statistics Unit, Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT).

While congratulating Mrs. Tuzakana and Ms. Pitaboe for the fine achievement for NSO, Government Statistician Douglas Kimi said the two officers represent the young and growing number of highly competent Statisticians of the country.
“They also represent the hard working women of the NSO, MOFT and women in the country. Their awards are also awards recognizing all individual and hardworking staff of the NSO and not just themselves.

“Without the support of other NSO staff, they could not have being awarded these prices. I am excited and grateful that our PS MOFT has recognized both these awards for the NSO. These awards also come at the time of the sudden passing away of the late Ms. Irene Kalauma who was the Head of the Social Demographic Section and Director of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS).

“These awards also recognize her leadership of the Section, and also her guidance and grooming of Mrs. Tuzakana and Ms. Pitaboe,” Mr Kimi said.
He said Mrs. Tuzakana has contributed enormously in being author of the “Fertility Analysis” in Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) 2015 Analysis report.

“Her contribution has drawn enormous support for SIG and stakeholders who are now using the results in policy and planning, especially in improving health outcomes for the country.
“She has also co-authored the “Family Planning Chapter “HIV and AIDS Related Knowledge, Attitudes and behavior”, coordinated the dissemination of DHS results across the country and acted as Coordinator of Honiara based National Agriculture Survey 2017 (NAS) as well as being the provided support for the analysis of the tourism/visitor arrival statistics including resolving and improving data quality arrangements other line Ministries,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kimi said Ms. Pitaboe is a young and upcoming professional.
“In 2017, she has performed well in key statistical projects such as the 2015 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) analysis and dissemination phases, supported the National Statistics Development Strategy (NSDS) work including presentations during launching, participated in the National Agriculture Survey 2017 (NAS) and even during passing of late Ms. Irene Kalauma she stepped up support towards the work of the Social Demographic Section.
“She was also author of “Characteristics of Survey Respondents” Analysis Chapter, DHS 2015. Her analysis is now being used by SIG and stakeholders in policy and planning, especially in health outcomes for the country.
“I am also delighted that the PS MOFT has awarded a special recognition award to NSO’s Social Demographic Section in 2017. This is a positive boost for staff morale and credibility to NSO’s work overall, as NSO prepares for the 2018 year,” Mr Kimi stressed.
