Justice Sector Mentoring Program Launched
Honiara, Tuesday 27th February 2018 –
An innovative mentoring program, pairing successful private sector
leaders with emerging leaders in the justice and corrections sector, was
launched on Monday 26 February 2018. The mentoring program is a
collaborative partnership between the Solomon Islands Government and the
Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), and is
supported by the Australian Government’s Solomon Islands Justice
Program.
The
program, called “People’s Ability to Lead”, provides structured
training to selected emerging leaders in the justice sector, and pairs
them with private sector mentors.
Speaking
at the launch, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and Legal
Affairs (MJLA), Ethel Sigimanu, described how crucial leadership was to
the justice sector. PS Ethel noted she could see many leadership
qualities already in her staff and how the role of good leadership is to
nurture those qualities further.
PS
Sigimanu said how pleased she was to see the mentoring program grow out
of a partnership with SICCI. This sentiment was echoed by the
Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Roderick
Brazier, who noted this was a further example of the Australian
government supporting the private sector and Solomon Islands Government
to work together. Mr Brazier said that leadership is a skill that
transcends sectors and noted how this program complemented the other
support Australia provided to the justice sector. He thanked the mentors
for volunteering their time.
SICCI’s
Chief Executive Officer, Dennis Meone, thanked MJLA and Correctional
Services Solomon Islands for taking the initiative to collaborate with
the private sector, saying it paves the way for ongoing leadership
training initiatives and is a model for learning for both public and
private sector. He added that the relationship reinforces the Memorandum
of Understanding signed by the Government and SICCI last year, which
created a platform for partnership and relationship building.
